چکیده

Mode competition of a free-electron laser is modeled by the Ginzburg-Landau equation. The stability of a single-mode solution is analyzed, and connections are established with known instabilities of the GinzburgLandau equation. It is found that the principal mode with the largest gain is always stable and hence there is no Benjamin-Feir instability. However, the Eckhaus ~or phase! instability generally occurs if the frequency of a mode lies outside of a designated range centered on the principal mode. Under certain conditions, the Eckhaus instability can cause a sudden chaotization and spikiness in the radiation field. Analytical criteria and scaling for single-mode operation are given and tested by numerical simulations. A theoretical controversy on single-mode operation of the free-electron laser at the University of California at Santa Barbara is resolved. @S1063-651X~98!16009-9#

Ginzburg-Landau Model and Single-Mode Operation of a Free-Electron Laser Oscillator

It is shown that the radiation field in a long-pulse, low-gain free-electron laser oscillator obeys the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. The question of single-mode operation is investigated by analysis and simulation, and the results are compared with experiments at the University of California at Santa Barbara, as well as the Dutch fusion free-electron-maser experiment. It is shown that the ...

Ginzburg}Landau model for a long-pulse low-gain free-electron laser oscillator

The Ginzburg}Landau model for the radiation "eld of a free-electron laser (FEL) was originally derived for a high-gain ampli"er (S.Y. Cai and A. Bhattacharjee, Phys. Rev. A 43 (1991) 6934). With a view to making precise comparisons with experimental data from the long-pulse FEL oscillator at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) (L.R. Elias, G. Ramian, J. Hu, A. Numerical study on self-similar pulses in mode-locking fiber laser by coupled Ginzburg-Landau equation model.

A theoretical model is established to study the self-similar pulses in nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) mode-locked fiber lasers. The propagation of pulse in single mode fibers and gain fibers are described by coupled Ginzburg- Landau equation (GLE). Two wave plates and a polarizer are considered to realize the NPE mechanism in simulation. This model describes the laser completely and pro...

Self-starting of passively mode-locked lasers with fast saturable absorbers.

Self-starting of passively mode-locked lasers with fast saturable absorption is studied. Our basic assumption is that the lasers will self-start when cw operation is unstable and mode-locked operation is stable. We start with a standard model, closely related to the Ginzburg–Landau equation, that is valid when the change in the time variation of the laser light during one round trip through the...
